Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Read New Text Messages in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

As same as with other messaging apps, the stock Messaging app also lets you do two-ways communication via messages. With this app, you can easily send or receive messages, either text or multimedia messages. This app has been equipped with various useful features, some of them will provide you with several ways to read the incoming messages. Each of them has the advantage that can be used based on your need.

How to read a new text message?
In this post, we'll learn 4 different ways to read a new text message. You can choose the one that best suit your need.

Method #1: From the Messaging app
This is the basic method to read a new message. See the following steps to do so:
  1. Open the Messaging app.
  2. The conversation with the latest message will be displayed at the top of the list and it'll be labelled with a number of unread messages.
  3. Tap the required conversation.
  4. Read the message. The latest message will be displayed at the very bottom of the conversation.

Method #2: From the lock screen
By default, when a new text message is received, you'll be notified with a notification in the lock screen. If you have enabled text message preview on lock screen, you'll be provided with a short preview of the message. Tap the notification or text preview in the lock screen and then do your screen lock method(e.g: swipe the screen, draw the pattern, enter the PIN, etc. It all depends on your current lock screen settings) to open up the new message in the Messaging app.

Method #3: From the notification panel
By default, when a new text message is received, you'll be notified on the status bar and in the notification panel. If you have enabled text message preview on the status bar, you'll be provided with a short preview of the message on the status bar and in the notification panel. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap the notification or text preview of the new message to open up the new message in the Messaging app.

Method #4: From the pop-up display
When you have enabled message pop up display, a new message will be displayed as pop up when the screen is not locked. It'll remain be displayed at the top on any screen until you take an action on it or close it manually. You can either scroll down or up the message on the pop up to read the whole message or tap on the pop up display to read the whole message with more conveniently in the Messaging app.

I personally like using the last method because I often forget or accidentally ignore the new messages. The pop-up display intensely tells me when I have a new message no matter what the screen or app that is being used and it forces me to pay attention on it so that I won't miss any important message anymore. So, how about you? Which method do you like best to read new messages?
